John M. Kennedy, Jr. was elected Suffolk County Comptroller and took office on January 1, 2015. His office's mission is to ensure that County funds are expended in compliance with all laws, rules, and regulations mandated by the State Comptroller, local laws, and the Suffolk County Charter. Additionally, the office retains custody over Suffolk County’s cash and implements property tax-related responsibilities in accordance with the Suffolk County Tax Act.
In addition to the issuance of the County’s debt instruments, the Comptroller’s Office has broad responsibilities in investment and finance, as well as the functions of a treasurer. As the Chief Fiscal Officer, Kennedy provides leadership in financial management and fiscal accountability by engaging in accounting and financial reporting services, the examination of all contracts, expenditures, and payrolls prior to payment, and auditing County departments and nonprofit agencies funded by the County. He focuses on streamlining operations by leveraging technology and aims for more accurate and timely cash-flow analysis.
John Kennedy holds a master’s degree in business administration from Adelphi University and a Juris Doctor degree from St. John’s University School of Law. Before being elected Comptroller, he served the constituents of the 12th Legislative District for 10 years and worked as the Official Examiner of Title for the County Clerk’s Office for 8 years. In total, John Kennedy has over 38 years of experience in county and state government.
